Maharaja is a Tamil action thriller directed and written by Nithilan Swaminathan, starring Vijay Sethupathi in the titular role alongside Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam, Abhirami and Sachana Namidass. Produced by Sudhan Sundaram and Jagadish Palanisamy, the film follows a barber who approaches the police after his beloved “Lakshmi” goes missing. A Massive Critical & Commercial Success
Released in June 2024, Maharaja received widespread appreciation for its screenplay, direction and performances, particularly Vijay Sethupathi’s portrayal of the central character. Critics praised its gripping, twist-heavy narrative, while audiences also embraced the film; Rotten Tomatoes currently lists an 83% critics score and 94% audience score. The film went on to become a major commercial success, with Sacnilk estimating its worldwide gross at around ₹199.2 crore, an impressive result for a film made on a relatively modest scale. Its subsequent performance in China further expanded its international reach, with the film reportedly collecting ₹91.65 crore there alone.
Maharaja Heads To Hollywood
The success has now opened an unexpected new chapter, with Maharaja set to be remade in Hollywood. Producer Sudhan Sundaram confirmed that a Hollywood agency approached the makers for the remake rights following the film’s success in China and on OTT platforms. The agency is reportedly working to set up the project with an A-list Hollywood actor, with production likely to begin in 2027. There is already buzz around Matthew McConaughey potentially taking up Vijay Sethupathi’s role, but the producer has clarified that his casting is not confirmed and that the agency will announce the final cast and studio details.
